A year later, Gill is back where it all started. In New Zealand with the senior Indian team, Shubman Gill is ready for the big stage.Immediately after his sensational World Cup campaign, Gill played in the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders and scored 203 runs incuding a fine 57 not out. Gill made his mark in the Ranji Trophy too with a 328-ball 268 against Tamil Nadu.Shubman Gill watched as his Under-19 captain from the World Cup Prithvi Shaw scored a hundred on Test debut. After an impressive performance against the visiting West Indies, Shaw was the first choice opener for the Test series in Australia before an injury ruled him out of the tour. With the World Cup round the corner, Gill would have given up hope of an India call-up. But when Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul were banned for their sexist remarks on Koffee with Karan, a door opened up for Gill. He and Vijay Shankar were named replacements.Shubman Gill had his first net session with the Indian team and he will look to learn plenty from Virat Kohli, who is the undisputed king of the cricket world. On Tuesday, he became the first man ever to win all three ICC awards in a single year.”I am really looking forward to meeting him [Kohli], having a chat with him, and closely looking at the way he practices for games,” Gill told kkr.in.advertisement”I think because of him, a lot of trends have changed in Team India. Fitness levels have changed for most players, and India is one of the best fielding sides in the world right now.All these things are very important. When your role is purely of a batsman or a bowler, it’s possible that two out of five games, you could fail to impress. So you need to find other ways to contribute to your team. These are really important aspects of cricket,” Gill said.Gill may not immediately get a game in New Zealand but watching Virat Kohli from close quarters will be a huge inspiration. He looked solid at practice and some pleasant memories from his last tour of New Zealand will keep Shubman Gill in good spirits for what will be his most cherished moment if he does get a maiden India cap.(Written by Rajarshi Gupta)Also Read | New Zealand focused on how to best combat Virat Kohli, says Kane WilliamsonAlso Read | Virat Kohli not New Zealand’s only concern: Ross Taylor wary of Rohit and DhawanAlso Read | MS Dhoni eyes Sachin Tendulkar’s record in New Zealand after hitting form in AustraliaFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
