Legislative Panel Looks At Teen Sex Abuse Rate

first_imgIndiana lawmakers are going to review the high rate of teenage sexual assaults in the state. The goal is to seek better protection for children.A legislative panel heard from several experts about the problem on Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control said just over 17 percent of girls in grades 9 to 12 have reported being raped. The national average is 10.5 percent.Officials believe the number may be even higher because many victims never speak up.Some said talking openly about the issue is a good way to make a change. Therapist Malia Crosby, who was sexually assaulted when she was 16, said the lack of public discussion about the issue makes it difficult for a teen to even understand if they were a victim of a sex crime.“Sometimes sitting in that discomfort, you can make great strides. I think that’s kind of what we’re doing here. This is uncomfortable, but we can do great things from that,” Crosby said.last_img read more

No-names controlling the NBA Finals so far

first_imgSan Antonio Spurs’ Danny Green, left, reacts with Gary Neal after scoring during the first half at Game 3 of the NBA Finals basketball series against the Miami Heat, Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in San Antonio. (AP Photo/Eric Gay) by Jon KrawczynskiAP Basketball WriterSAN ANTONIO (AP) — The NBA Finals opened as such a juicy matchup of A-list stars.LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh for the defending champion Miami Heat against Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili for the old guard San Antonio Spurs making one last run at one more championship.Big 3 vs. Big 3. Winner take all.Once the series actually started, a group of D-listers crashed the party.Gary Neal and Danny Green combined for 51 points and 13 3-pointers in San Antonio’s Game 3 victory over Miami on Tuesday night, carrying the Spurs to a 2-1 lead in a best-of-seven series that has been controlled by no-names, not big names.“We don’t expect a performance like this from those kind of guys, but they were great,” Duncan said after San Antonio routed Miami 113-77. “They did it. They found their spots and knocked them out.”Been that way all series. On both sides.Green, who was twice cut by San Antonio and spent a summer in Slovenia, may be the early leader for Finals MVP after scoring 27 points in Game 3. He also hit four big 3-pointers in the Spurs’ Game 1 victory in Miami and was a perfect 6 for 6 from long range in Game 2, outshining the four-time MVP James every step of the way.“Never thought in a million years that would happen,” Green said.Neal had to go overseas as well and even delayed his honeymoon just to get a chance to play on the Spurs’ summer league team a few Julys ago. On Tuesday night, his big 3-pointers at the end of the first half and the start of the fourth quarter buried the Heat. Those two have teamed with Kawhi Leonard — a lottery pick so soft-spoken that teammates started to wonder if he ever talked at all — to give the Spurs a Little 3 that has stepped up and taken over while their more famous teammates have been underwhelming.Duncan, Ginobili and Parker have been the identity of the Spurs for years, teaming for three championships in five years in the middle of the last decade. But they combined to shoot 10 for 33 in their Game 2 thumping in Miami. In Game 3, Duncan had a solid 12 points and 14 rebounds, but Ginobili had just seven points and a bad hamstring limited Parker to six.Leonard added 14 points, 12 rebounds and four steals to pick up the slack.“It’s a dream come true,” Neal said. “Me and Danny both went through a lot of stuff together. We were guys that showed up two hours before practice started to get shots up and to prove to the coaching staff that we belong, and we’re going to do whatever we need to get minutes.”It’s been the same way for the Heat, who expect so much from James, Wade and Bosh, the celebrated threesome that united in South Beach three years ago to chase not one, not two, not three titles. But all three have posted numbers far below their career averages in these finals. James has his three lowest scoring outputs of the postseason in the first three games of the finals, including a 15-point, 7-for-21 stinker in Game 3, and is scoring just 16.7 points per game. Wade has gotten off to fast starts, only to fade as the game wears on and Bosh has posted two of the quietest double-doubles you’ll ever see in the last two games.“I think if you look at every series in the past in basketball, the role players are going to have big series, even if the best players out there, the superstars and everything, are really getting their regular numbers,” Bosh said. “You can easily have role players that are doing what they’re supposed to do.”In their place, it’s been Mario Chalmers, who scored 19 points in Game 2 and was the instigator in a game-clinching 30-5 run that evened the series. It’s also been Mike Miller, a banged-up journeyman who was barely playing when the finals began. He is 9 for 10 on 3-pointers this series, and was the only Heat player who showed up for Game 3 with 15 points on 5-for-5 shooting from 3.“You can’t just focus on three people or on one person,” Chalmers said. “You’ve got to focus on the entire five that’s out there.”For whatever reason, the stars just haven’t been playing like stars in these finals.“It’s a difficult feel to get with the rhythm of this series,” Bosh said. “It’s been a very odd series so far. I’m sure it’s going to continue to be just as crazy as the last six days have been.”___Follow Jon Krawczynski on Twitter: http://twitter.com/APKrawczynskilast_img read more

Sixy football: Man City thump Shakhtar

first_imgGabriel Jesus netted a hat-trick as Manchester City powered to a 6-0 Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk but they will have to wait to book their place in the last 16 after Hoffenheim netted a late equaliser at Lyon in Group F’s other fixture. The hosts were in total control as they eased to a comfortable win at the Etihad Stadium, giving City brief respite from the series of allegations about their financial conduct that have been published by German magazine Der Spiegel this week, upon which the club have declined to comment. With the focus firmly back on on-field matters, City put on an efficient display that opened with a straightforward finish for David Silva, before Raheem Sterling was wrongly awarded a spot-kick after kicking the turf. 34 Rural Households Connected Under RER

first_imgAnother 100 persons from approximately 34 households in rural St. Elizabeth have joined the list of beneficiaries to access electricity through the Government’s Rural Electrification Programme (REP). The most recent beneficiaries, who were officially connected on Wednesday (November 28), are from the community of Powell Town in Southfield. Chairman of the REP, Rev. Garnett Roper, who addressed a ceremony held to mark the occasion, informed that another 12 communities will be added to the national grid within the next month. “More than anything, we (at the REP) believe that we are expanding the frontier of national development,” he stated. He said that the beneficiaries now have an added opportunity to make their contribution to the Gross National Product (GNP) of the country because they now have access to the electricity. Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon. Phillip Paulwell, who was on hand, said that bringing electricity to all communities throughout Jamaica is part of the development process. “We can’t speak about a knowledge-based economy if people do not have electricity. We cannot talk about logging on, and ICT (Information Communication Technology) if people cannot plug their computers into an electricity socket, and so as we have done in other parts of the country, we want to see development throughout Jamaica,” he stated. Minister Paulwell urged the new beneficiaries to live up to their end of the bargain and accept the responsibility that comes with the service.  He informed that “very shortly” a national campaign will be launched to target persons, who illegally connect to the electricity supply.  He pointed out that over 10 per cent of bill charges is for losses related to electricity theft. Minister Paulwell also called for genuine effort to be made by all to conserve electricity whenever they can. Meanwhile, President of the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), Kelly Tomblin, gave a commitment that her company will continue to strive to be the kind of partner that is deserving of all its customers. The REP was incorporated in 1975 with the specific mandate of expanding the reach of electricity supply to rural areas, where the provision of such services would not be economically viable for commercial providers of electricity. The REP constructs electrical distribution pole line in electrified areas and provides house wiring assistance through a loan programme to householders. More than 75, 000 households have benefitted under the programme to date.last_img read more

IPL final MI CSK rivalry set to unfold on biggest stage

first_imgHyderabad: Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings seem to always spiral towards each other in their relentless hunt for the Indian Premier League title. On Sunday, the two sides will face each other for the fourth time this season. It is also the fourth time that CSK and MI will be pitted against each other in an IPL final. They are the two most successful teams in the tournament’s history and the final on Sunday will be another chapter in what has been an epic rivalry between two sides who are as different from each other as a pair of sporting opposites can be. Also Read – We will push hard for Kabaddi”s inclusion in 2024 Olympics: Rijiju While CSK are known to be a team that dominates the group stage, MI are notoriously slow starters. Both sides stayed true to their reputation this season. While MI had a sputtering start to their season, before taking off, CSK remained top of the table for much of the group stages and were one of the first teams to confirm qualification to the playoffs. However, CSK were piped to the top spot by Mumbai Indians thanks to the 9-wicket hiding the latter handed out to Kolkata Knight Riders in their last group game. MI are also the only team that CSK haven’t been able to beat this season with the MS Dhoni-led side losing the two group matches and the first qualifier against their rivals. Also Read – Djokovic to debut against Shapovalov at Shanghai Masters Mumbai also have the statistical edge in IPL finals played between the two sides, having ended three out of the four title clashes between the two sides on the winning side. However, CSK displayed ominous form in the way they swatted Delhi Capitals aside in the second Qualifier. The ever-reliable CSK spinners helped them restrict Delhi Capitals to 147/9. Coming to the chase, Shane Watson finally found form and his opening partnership of 81 with Faf du Plessis set the stage for a rollicking win for the Yellow Brigade. They ended up winning the match by six wickets with an over to spare. Unpredictability is a constant in the IPL, a fact that has been as apparent as ever this season with the numerous collapses and death over run bursts that we have seen in the group stage. There is no reason to believe that the final would be any different. But it will all boil down to the team which holds its nerves on the day of the big battle.
